About Us
Aloha! The Dojo Maui was Founded in 2022 in beautiful upcountry Maui. Our mission has always been to combine tradition and innovation, emphasizing self defense and self-discovery rather than competition. We pride ourselves on inner-development over solely outward display. At The Dojo Maui, each vigorous hour spent training is seen as an opportunity to build confidence, discipline and both mental and physical strength. Come join Sensei Max Lee and his team at our new convenient location in Makawao.

Sensei Max Lee
Martial arts has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. From the days of being a keiki and watching movies with my dad and trying to do all the moves on the couch… It wasn't until I was 11 yrs old that I finally got the chance to really learn martial arts. Now, going on 30 yrs later, the love is still there.
I come from a family of Tae Kwon Do practitioners, but I fell in love with Karate. My first exposure was Shotokan Karate. Then, in 2000, I was introduced to Goju Ryu Karate, which became my main practice in which I hold a Black Belt and a rank of Shodan-Ho (since 2012).
I was lucky enough to have several Sensei's teaching me at the same time. They helped mold me into the human being I am today. To be a person of not good, but great character. To understand what respect and humility truly mean. To say excuse me, thank you, and please. I have been able to take something special from each of them and combine it with my own style of teaching. To be able to share my passion with others is truly one of the greatest rewards in life.
Throughout my martial arts journey, I've also been lucky enough to train in Aiki Jujitsu and Boxing (in NYC) and in BJJ, Muay Thai, and MMA on Maui. I previously taught adult and keiki Karate at The Gym Maui.
All of my core Karate training has been NYC-based. I competed in the East Coast tournament circuit for over a decade, as well as internationally. I won numerous championships and grand championships in kata and fighting, going undefeated from 2008 to 2012.
I believe martial arts is for everyone, but not everyone is for martial arts. If I can play a small part in a person's journey to find his or her passion, even if it isn't Karate at the end of the day, that is truly a life worth living.
